The Rivian R2 in January Sleet: 214 Miles, Two Charging Stops, Zero Complaints

We drove Chicago to Milwaukee in a January sleet storm with the heat on full blast. Here's what the range calculator didn't tell us — and what the car figured out on its own.

Year Three With a Model Y: What Nobody Warns You About the Software Updates

Priya Sharma bought her Model Y in 2022. She's been keeping notes ever since. This is what year three actually looks like — the good, the strange, and the one update that genuinely changed how she drives.

What Actually Happens to Your Range When It's 28°F and Raining

We left the garage at 6:04 AM with 287 miles showing on the range estimator. The outside temperature was 28°F. It had been raining since midnight, and the forecast called for it to turn to sleet by Rockford. We were headed to Madison — 148 miles north.

The car — a 2024 Rivian R2 on its second winter — had been plugged in overnight. The battery was pre-conditioned to 68°F before we touched the door handle. That matters more than most drivers realize, and it's the first thing we're going to explain.

"Cold batteries resist fast charging. Pre-conditioning isn't a luxury feature — it's the difference between a 22-minute charge stop and a 47-minute one."

By the time we hit the outskirts of Elgin, the range estimator had dropped to 241 miles — a 46-mile deficit on 38 miles driven. The heater was running at full, wipers on intermittent, and the road spray was continuous. None of this was surprising. All of it was manageable.

The Charging Desert Isn't Where You Think It Is

Everyone assumes the charging desert is rural. Empty highway, two-lane roads, the kind of place where a gas station is a relief. They're wrong. The worst charging gaps in America right now are in mid-sized cities — the places where EV adoption is growing fastest but infrastructure investment lagged three years behind.

"Tulsa has more EVs per capita than Portland. It has one-fifth the DC fast chargers."

We mapped every DCFC station in the continental US against EV registration data from the last four quarters. The correlation is almost perfectly inverted in 23 metropolitan areas. We're publishing the full dataset alongside this story.

Converting 40 Delivery Vans: The Real Spreadsheet

Greenfield Logistics converted their first 40 delivery vans in Q3 2025. We got access to the actual numbers — not the press release version. Fuel savings, downtime, driver complaints, and the one charging decision that cost them $180,000.

Annual fuel cost (diesel)$312,000
Annual charging cost (EV)$94,000
Net annual savings$218,000

"The mistake was buying Level 2 chargers for a fleet that runs two shifts. You need DC fast, even in the depot."

3 changed my habits
"The car I bought in 2022 is genuinely better than the one I drove off the lot. I can't say that about any other vehicle I've owned."

Three years ago I was a skeptic who bought an EV because the math forced me to. Today I'm writing monthly dispatches about it for a publication I didn't know existed when I signed the papers. That's the thing about ownership diaries — the story changes.
